Have a Mammoth New Year

I have some friends that snowboard. I have some friends I've met through snowboarding. I have some snowboards I've met through friends. There are some very VERY strange cats out there sometimes...I guess all sports have them. I've heard about them, and heard stories from them, but man, I never experienced it first hand.

In general I'm a fairly lazy snowboarder. I'll get up when I want to, go on the runs I like, and when I get tired I'll stop. One of my friends though, let's call him, uh...RL, is a freak. His favorite quote?

"There's no such thing as friends on a powder day."

Ok, now I understand the allure of fresh pow, and the joy of getting to it first and all that, but holy crap...can ya wait at the top of the lift for one minute?

What's the point of snowboarding if you're not sharing it with friends? It's like surfing some unknown point break on the perfect swell with nobody else out... it's just not as fun if someone's not there to share it with. So to RL, and everyone else that places "getting there first" above "getting there with your friends first" I say go, have fun, I'll be on Lincoln Mountain.

I've just decided that pretty much every time in the future we go to mammoth it's going to be by ourselves or with 2-4 close friends. Just too much of a clusterfuck trying to do it with a bunch of people when you only really know a couple of them. Food issues in the condo. Organizational issues on the mountain. Interpersonal turmoil of a few people ruining the whole vibe. Drama. All drama.

I gotta say that this guy Jake I was boarding with was really freakin fun. He lives up in Vegas but is coming down to SD in a few weeks, he'll be introduced to the Mmrrrrs in grand fashion.

Rhiannon's snowboarding is really coming along. Once she gets her legs back in shape (had an ankle injury that sidelined her for a while) she's going to progress really quickly. I'm so proud of her.

Best part of the weekend: cruising the trees off 25
Worst part of the weekend: snowboarder taking the stupidest line I've ever seen and slamming into me as I was strapping in off a lift. Full speed, but he hit my back with his so it could have been much worse.

And now Rhi and I are broke and dealing with the flu.

Eh, it was worth it.
