aol intervention

Recoil Magazine has a great article entitled "Tech geeks perform intervention on AOL® user"

Some excerpts:

"I've seen people get mixed up in that whole AOL scene too many times to just sit back and let it happen to my good friend. Of course, none of us wanted to have an intervention, but those of us who use real Internet service providers (ISPs) and web browsers knew that we had to get Jim off of that shit as soon as possible, for his own good."

"I had warned Jim over and over again about how bad AOL was, and I told him to stay away from using it in even a recreational capacity," said Gasper. "Jim would swear up and down to me that he was only using dialup service, and only connecting once or twice a week at most in the privacy of his own home. But I recently discovered that Jim's been looking for someone to hook him up – with AOL for Broadband. Talk about hitting rock bottom. At that point I knew it was time to take action."

"Jim and I had gone to a party at Jerry's house to just kind of hang out and drink beer with some friends, but about an hour after we arrived I noticed that Jerry and Jim had snuck off and locked themselves in Jerry's bedroom," recalled Gasper. "I figured maybe they were just up there smoking a joint or doing some white or something, but it turned out Jerry had bought his first personal computer and the two of them were up there experimenting with AOL. Pretty soon Jim was going over to Jerry's house almost every night to hook up. Eventually, Jerry came to his senses and quit using AOL cold-turkey. But by that time Jim had already started buying his own."

brilliant.
